Low Cost Shingle Option – Are 3 Tab Shingles Right for Your Home?
3 Tab Shingles (also known as Strip Shingles and Shed Shingles) are one of the least expensive options on the market, making them preferable for economy-priced homes and rental properties.
Unlike architectural shingles, 3 Tab Shingles are all the same size and shape.
Their thin, flat and lightweight design makes them the least expensive, but also the least durable.
Most 3 Tab Shingles can only withstand winds up to 60 mph. They also show roof damage and roof deck inconsistencies much more than other shingles.
Unfortunately, less durability means shorter warranties. These low-cost shingles typically carry a 20, 25 or 30 year warranty. However, while some may be rated for 25-30 years, they typically only last about 15-18 years.
3 Tab Shingles are not ideal for home resale value.
For decades, these basic, low-cost shingles were the “go-to shingle”. Today, their popularity has fallen dramatically. Most homes have replaced these Shingles with Architectural Shingles for greater durability and enhanced aesthetics.
Over the past 10 years, we’ve had the most requests for these shingles come from customers in Burlington, Dousman, Wauwatosa and West Allis.
